So what
Why new casinos need extra care
-
No track record
A new casino has not had time to show how it handles withdrawals and complaints. Keep your first deposit small.
-
Big packages, many deposits
Wagering is now capped at 10 times, but large welcome packages are spread over several deposits and can pull you into depositing more than you planned.
-
Check the UK licence
UK rules, GAMSTOP and the complaints process only cover casinos with a UK Gambling Commission licence. Check the public register before you sign up.
-
Tools from day one
If you cannot set a deposit limit in the account menu, do not deposit.

Set a budget and stick to it
Decide before you deposit how much you can afford to lose this month, and treat it as spent on entertainment. Never use money meant for rent, bills or debt, and never top up to win back a loss.
Set a schedule
Decide how long a session lasts and use the casino's reality check or session limit to remind you. Slots and crash games run a round every few seconds, so an hour costs more than it feels.
Know when to walk away
- You are chasing losses or raising stakes to win back money.
- You play when you are stressed, low or after drinking.
- You hide how much you play from people close to you.
- You borrow or use money set aside for something else.
If any of these sound familiar, read our page on gambling addiction.
Start small at a new casino
Deposit an amount you would accept losing to a failed withdrawal, and ask for a small cash-out early. Skip the welcome offer if its wagering would keep you playing longer than you planned.
Self-exclusion and blocking
Self-exclusion at one casino closes your account there only. GAMSTOP blocks you from every gambling site licensed in Great Britain at once, for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years, and it is free. It stays in place after the minimum period until you ask for it to be lifted.
GAMSTOP does not cover sites without a UK licence. To block those as well, add a device-wide tool such as Gamban or the free BetBlocker. Most UK banks also let you block gambling payments on your card in their app.
Keep it adults only
You must be 18 or older to gamble online, and UK-licensed casinos must check your age and identity before you can deposit or play. Keep casino logins private, use parental controls on shared devices and do not save payment details where children can reach them.
The tools to look for in your account
Every casino licensed in Great Britain must offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. Look for the others before you deposit.
| Tool | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps how much you can deposit per day, week or month | Before your first deposit |
| Loss limit | Stops play once you have lost a set amount | When you start playing regularly |
| Session limit or reality check | Logs you out or reminds you after a set time | Every session |
| Time-out | Locks the account for a short break, from a day to a few weeks | After a heavy loss or a bad day |
| Self-exclusion | Closes the account for months or years at that casino | When you want to stop playing there |
| GAMSTOP | Blocks you from every gambling site licensed in Great Britain | When you want to stop playing anywhere |

Responsible gaming questions
What limits should I set at a new casino?
A deposit limit before your first deposit, then a loss limit and a session time limit. Set them lower than you think you need; lowering a limit usually applies at once, while raising one is often delayed.
Should I take the welcome bonus?
Only if you have read the terms. Wagering is capped at 10 times the bonus at UK-licensed casinos, but £100 at 10x still means £1,000 in bets before you can withdraw it, which can keep you playing longer than you planned.
What if a casino has no limit tools?
Do not deposit. Every casino licensed in Great Britain must let you set deposit limits and self-exclude, so a site without them is either not UK-licensed or not following the rules.
Does self-exclusion at one casino block the others?
No, but GAMSTOP does. Registering with GAMSTOP blocks you from every gambling site licensed in Great Britain for the period you choose. A blocking app such as Gamban adds a block on unlicensed sites too.
Is gambling a way to make money?
No. Casino games are built so that the casino keeps a share of all money staked over time. Budget for gambling as money spent on entertainment.
What do UK rules require of a licensed casino?
It must verify that you are 18 or older before you play, offer deposit limits and self-exclusion, take part in GAMSTOP, refuse credit card payments, cap slot stakes at £5 a spin (£2 if you are under 25) and cap bonus wagering at 10 times.
