Why new online casinos ask for ID

Since May 2019 a UK-licensed casino must verify your name, address and date of birth before you can deposit or play, including free demo games. Most checks happen automatically against public records; some players are asked for documents.

Later checks, on source of funds or affordability, can follow larger deposits. They are licence requirements, not a sign that you have done anything wrong.

Why casinos check

  • Age: gambling is for adults aged 18 or older.
  • Identity and fraud: to stop stolen identities and payment fraud.
  • Money laundering: UK and casino rules require it.
  • Payments: to confirm the card or account is yours.
  • Safer gambling: to check self-exclusion and affordability.

Documents they may ask for

Tips

  • Register with your real details exactly as on your documents.
  • Upload documents early, so your first withdrawal is not delayed.
  • Send documents only through the casino's secure upload, not by email if an upload is offered.

Questions

ID checks: questions

Why do I have to verify before I play?

Since May 2019, UK rules require casinos to check age and identity before you can deposit or play.

Is it safe to send my ID?

To a UK-licensed casino through its secure upload, yes. Data protection law applies.

How long does verification take?

Electronic checks take seconds; document checks can take up to a day or two.

Can I play free games without verifying?

Not at UK-licensed casinos; demo games also need age verification.

Responsible gaming

Play only if you are 18+ and it stays fun

These rules apply on every page of this site. A young casino has less history to judge it by, so the limits matter more.

18+ only

Adults only, everywhere

You must be 18 or older. A licensed casino must check your age and identity before you can deposit or play, so have your ID ready when you register.
